Artists Point

This was painted on location at the “Grand Canyon of Yellowstone” in August 2013. I visited here twice before but was never able to paint here until this year. If not for painting for this “Legacy of the West” show, I’m not sure I would have attempted it this time because of the throngs of people who were there...but I'm so glad I did. In looking at photos of Abby painting there, this had to be a stark contrast to the quiet solitude she must have experienced. I arrived very early to set up my easel in a spot that was as “out of the way” as possible from the main walkways and still have a nice vantage point of the falls. I was not able to reach the areas where Abby must have painted from 100 years ago...there are walkways, stairs and small platforms at the vista points now that surely weren’t there in Abby’s day. Most are too small to accommodate an artist with an easel during busy visiting hours in the park. Despite the crowds, it was a beautiful “office” to work in that morning...with a breathtaking view!
